About the Artist

Crossing back over the pond, back to a place where something’s always cooking, there is a new artist who has just started putting music out this year.

But don’t let that fool you.

Skinny Sands may only have two releases but the production value, style, and quality of music have all the potential to really turn out to be something special.

If there is any testament to just how serious the resurgence of organic music like folk, roots, bluegrass, americana, and adaptations/fusions of those genres has become, I have found this: I have covered quite a few folk artists out of Europe and they all say the same thing: that not a lot of people listen to the kind of music they’re producing. I think there’s a chance all of these artists might be the first ones to the party and they’re at the edge of the beginning of something. Artists like Unbelievable Truth, Kathi Deakin, Novelley, and John Wallace are putting out more organic, roots-infused music and the response to what they’re creating is huge.

Skinny Sands fits right into the narrative of these talents. Skinny Sands likes to “create mellow, reflective music for quieter moments.”

Sit With Me, Cover Art

His debut, Sit With Me, released on May 30th, and has already been spun nearly 3,000 times on Spotify.

Skinny Sands has the talent to do great things. He has a clear set vision for how to reach his listeners: to “build a world that’s gentle, honest, and worth slowing down for.”

About the Song

Big World is the second release by London-based artist, Skinny Sands, and the follow-up to his debut single, Sit With Me. It runs at around two minutes and twenty seconds. This indie folk song is primarily acoustic-driven, with organic percussions and backing vocals all provided by Skinny Sands. Big World released on July 11th and was recorded independently by Skinny Sands.

About the Music

Like Sit With Me, Big World is a very chill, very relaxed folk tune that has a very positive vibe. Instrumentally, it features layered acoustic guitar parts, and some organic percussion instruments like a shaker and other hand-played instruments. There are other subtle parts that are featured, like a bass guitar and a very short part played by synth that helps build a transition towards the middle of the song.

I like how the song is composed in a little less traditional format. It’s not the typical ABABCB format. Instead, it sort of plays out like a poem, or sonnet, with this beautiful bridge that exists at the center.

Skinny Sands

Vocally, Skinny Sands has a lovely tenor voice with a very bright tone. He offers up layers and harmonies, and parallel octaves to really open his performance and fill a lot of the sound space for a song that is not very complex by way of the limited amount of vocals and instruments that were used to make it.

The production value is special with this recording. I really love the balance of the panning with these tracks. I love how the effects are infused into accent moments of the song. The bridge features a saturation of reverb that really open the song up, while also incorporating the synth, cymbal, and bass. Otherwise, this is a very crisp, clean, and clear track. It’s all mixed together and blended very nicely.

Final Thoughts

Skinny Sands is an artist I am very excited to get to know more of. With just two releases, he’s developed a habit of truly hitting the mark with his performance. It’s also exciting to know that he seems to be poised to release more music, including an EP, in the very near future.

I think Skinny Sands has a potential to make something of himself in folk music. He’s musically gifted. One of the greatest components of folk music is the folk festival. I would really love to see him putting himself out there and playing some music live to see how his music is being perceived. I feel very confident that the response will be a positive one.

Skinny Sands

Skinny Sands has proven to be a talented songwriter, a talented performer, and a talented producer, having etched out two fantastic songs with visualizers for both of them. As he continues to release music and grow his reach on social media, I hope to see him find a stage and showcase his special talent.

I know I will be listening, as Skinny Sands continues to grow and develop what I can only perceive will be a bright future in music. You should be too.
