About the Artist

It’s the moment I’ve all been waiting for.

In 1997, they gave us Almost Here. In 2000, they gave us sorrythankyou. In 2025, Rich Inner Life is here.

Unbelievable Truth Catalog

Out of Oxford, England, Unbelievable Truth are Andy Yorke, Nigel Powell, and Jason Moulster. Having originally formed in 1993, the band signed to Virgin records and, with their release of Almost Here, they would would reach #21 on the UK Billboard charts, including two singles charting in the top 40; Higher Than Reason and Solved. After touring the US in support of Tori Amos and playing other iconic shows, including an appearance on Later… With Jools Holland, they signed with the renowned Oxford indie label, Shifty Disco and released their second album, sorrythankyou. In spite of being a cult success and popular amongst their fan-base, sorrythankyou didn’t have the success of Almost Here and after releasing B-Sides, Unbelievable Truth went on hiatus.

Aside from occasional performances, York, Powell, and Moulster went out and did separate things; performing with other acts, solo projects, attending university, pursuing other professional ventures were all done, though the trio have always remained close and been friends. In an interview with Fifteen Minutes of Fame, back in March, Powell explained that they never really considered themselves as having broken up. The need to make music together just wasn’t at the forefront of their relationship. Until it was again.

FMOF Interview

In 2023, Unbelievable Truth reunited for a concert to celebrate 25 years after the release of Almost Here, a performance that brought with it the band’s first release since B-Sides. The show and the new Live Album would be the spark that would start a series of new recordings and, in late 2024, Unbelievable Truth announced the release of a new EP. Citizens Band, the 4-song EP, released on March 21st. In addition to the new music, Unbelievable Truth began playing shows around the UK, including festivals, and participating in other promotional events.

FMOF Blind Reaction for Chemtrails

On May 19th, in a post on social media, Powell made the surprise announcement that the band had completed their third studio album, to be titled Rich Inner Life, and it would release on September 26th, 2025.

About the Album

Rich Inner Life is officially the third studio album by Oxford’s Unbelievable Truth. Released by Noosphere Records, this 9-song LP has a run time of 40 minutes. After the March release of Citizens Band, Unbelievable Truth announced the release of Rich Inner Life. It released on September 26th, 2025 and was preceded by the singles Funny Peculiar (June 20) and You’ve Got It (September 12).

About the Music

Continuing with the incredible energy that was brought with the release of Citizens Band EP, Unbelievable Truth have outdone themselves in so many ways with Rich Inner Life. Three of the first songs were released prior to the album’s release. I don’t know if this decision was done consciously but it should be considered by artists going forward. It provided such a warm and familiar entrance into the listening experience. Opening with You’ve Got It, their most recent single really sets the tempo.

When Citizens Band EP released, Nigel, Andy, and I spent some time talking about the cohesiveness of the band and that work. How the EP felt like one fluid body of music. With Rich Inner Life, not only is the same cohesive relationship with the music there, it seems tighter. Yorke sounds possessed with the delivery of each lyric. He’s been so honest and detailed about how he internally processes his life and life in general.

You’ve Got It, Official Music Video

As the title track began with my first listen, I remember feeling a huge smile spread across my face as I heard Moulster’s bass part creep into existence. It gives so much body to the work. It is foundational and creative. It is melodic and progressive. A composition expertly played.

With Not to be Trusted, the rhythm of the entire song is just so much better than everybody else. I’m not just talking about Powell’s skilled percussion, which is played wonderfully. When Yorke’s vocals come in, I couldn’t help but ask, “Who else can do that? Who can deliver that opening lyric that well?” The way it comes in, the diction emphasized on every word. Not to be Trusted is one of my favorite songs on the record.

The body of work is stellar from start to finish. This Paradise, a slow groove; a blues/jazz swing. A melancholic piano. Instrument after instrument creeping in to share the story as Yorke ironically sings “Say goodbye to this paradise. It’s a shame it didn’t work out.” Moulster and Powell again find that well-engineered connection between bass and percussion that can only come from the experience they have working together in Eventually.

The last two tracks really resonate with me. With Find Your People, Yorke impresses with observations on blending into society, the anxieties suffered from that, and the remedy; having that circle of people around to have that gravitational comfort our “people” can give us. With Clear Line, I don’t even know where to begin. A 6 minute track, each moment is better than the last as it starts a ballad, it possesses a wonderful oboe and string composition, and climatically erupts with an explosive ending. Led, once again, with Moulster setting the tone on bass, layers of guitars, percussion, and strings add to the anticipation as Yorke’s vocals echo in the background, repeating “A real life to call my own.”

Final Thoughts

Listening to this record, I’m immersed with so many thoughts and feelings. Musicians all have their own reasons for doing things. The further up the ladder we climb, the less it becomes about making music and the more it becomes about making a business, with our music being the product. There are only a small handful of artists who ascend this ladder to the point that they can turn their attention back to just making music again.

I don’t know Unbelievable Truth well enough to assume their intentions, but I get the feeling that they want desperately to focus only on the music. I get the feeling that “marketing themselves,” is the necessary evil they try to avoid when possible.

Rich Inner Life, Live Acoustic

When I listen to Rich Inner Life, I can’t help but feel a little defensive because they shouldn’t have to “sell themselves.” The process is arguably beneath them. Everybody should be listening to this music. They’ve evolved beyond the blueprint timbres, the textbook chord progressions, and the cliche lyrics and subject-matter the trend chasers are drowning mainstream airways with.

The music industry is so toxic and dysfunctional though, that if a mainstream label or, major airway even read that they’ve “evolved,” they’d read “different” and rush fiendishly to the next thing that sounds like everything else. After watching the heartbreaking interview of Halsey on The Zane Lowe Show, perhaps it’s best to not be climbing that particular ladder.

I take comfort in the idea that people who want to hear a new Unbelievable Truth record will hear a new Unbelievable Truth record. It is upon us. It is 40 minutes of pure, intoxicating bliss. It’s abnormal and exquisite. You won’t find anything near its quality on top 100 radio.

That’s where my focus finds resolve. I’m not going to cheapen this moment by concerning myself with numbers. As a professional in the financial industry, I have a reflex to “look at the numbers.” Even if this album explodes, I don’t want to even think about that here. I want what’s best for Unbelievable Truth. Well, this is Unbelievable Truth: at their best. Seriously, they’ve never been better. This album is genius. I would boldly argue that Rich Inner Life rivals even the best work put out by that other band from Oxford. This is sensational music. I’ll never forget the moment I first heard it.

How good does an album for it to become someone’s core memory?

This good.
