About the Album

Change released on November 21st, 2025. It is the 4th collective single to be released by indie artist, Liz Bills, this year, and is the title track to a full LP that she played in it’s entirety for a live audience on November 21st. Change follows the release of Playin’ with Fire, Float On, and I’m Scared ( To Fall in Love Again).

First, I am calling this an “EP release because Change is part of a collection of songs representing one body of work, but it doesn’t fully represent that body, though it was technically the only song that released on Friday. We’ve had Playin’ with Fire and Float On for some time now.

Just when I thought I knew what I was getting with a Liz Bills record, she shows her audience, once again, that her vocal capabilities are extensively incredible. In Change, we see a dirtier, grungier side to her performance and she enhances each verse with a raspiness comparable to the likes of legendary vocalist, Janis Joplin.

In an era of music where the world is pushing for more digital presence-even in folk music, it’s hard not to find something that isn’t doing some hybrid version of the genre, Liz Bills may be the most radical pioneer of us all, as she clings to the traditional core of Indie Folk. There are no production tricks. There isn’t a big composition or arrangement that complicates her music. It is purely acoustic. One acoustic guitar and one voice. I don’t even think there is reverb. She may as well be singing and playing right in front of me. Yet, the result is stunningly breathtaking. Bills, once again, relies on something that she has that would even have most in the mainstream realm of music wanting more of: talent. She is one of the most talented vocalists I’ve ever had the privilege of hearing.

The Rules of the Game by Novelley

About the Artist

Novelley is another FMOF favorite. A compelling songwriter, she blends acoustic with ambience in a modern folk style of bold storytelling; often referencing unique outlooks on her work and experiences with mental health, family, dynamics, and her observations of the natural world around her.

Novelley, a German indie artist, juggles many balls, but had dedicated time to her work as a recording artist and she continues to build her platform on social media, as she has reached tens of thousands of listeners over the course of 2025.

About the Music

The Rules of the Game is the 10th single release of indie artist, Novelley, in 2025. Released on November 21st, it is technically a holiday song. I say technically, because it is a truly original take on the topic.

The Rules of the Game, is a song that visits Mary and Joseph the night Jesus was born. As they marvel over their new beautiful child, they (and his famous visitors) pose the question “Who’s gonna teach him to walk on lakes?”

Identifying the importance of this miraculous birth, the very people He came to save contemplate the weight of raising the King of Kings, the Son of God, and the Savior of Man.

It is an honest and compelling thought. I would even venture to say could spark further debate. Does He need to be taught about how He can burn His hand on fire? Or does He just know? He is the Son of God, but He was gifted to the world as a mortal man. He was a prophet, a vessel for the wisdom of god but he needed to be fed. He needed to sleep. Where did His lessons begin, and where did they end?

I think these questions are ones that we, the children of the world are meant to ask. Jesus, would simply exist in the moments; knowing the answer but learning from the lesson. Perhaps He knew that fire burned but He wanted Joseph to teach Him. Perhaps He could sleep when He wanted but He preferred a gentle song from Mary to lull Him to rest. Perhaps He could perform a miracle and craft any wood work imaginable, but He chose to learn to strike a chisel with a hammer. To feel the sweat and fatigue of hard work.

After all, what is an omnipotent God going to know about the nuances of being a mortal human? Jesus never exalted Himself above mankind. He traveled with the impoverished. He dined with sinners. He embraced the weak. He knew Peter would deny Him three times and He had forgiven him even before it happened. He knew Judas would betray him and he still invited him to eat at his last supper. He even asked his cousin, John the Baptist, to baptize Him.

Maybe that’s the answer to Mary’s question. To the three kings’ question. Maybe we weren’t meant to teach Christ how to walk on water, or how to change it to wine. In fact, I can only think of one thing humans can teach an Almighty, All-knowing, God. An immortal Deity; a ruler and protector of all.

We can teach Him how to be a human.
