Let the Broken Heart Inside, Cover Art

When I started Fifteen Minutes of Fame, I advertised my availability to listen to and review all kinds of music. Admittedly, I have gravitated to some more genre-specific reviews. Part of that is that most of the submissions I get are a particular few styles of music, but maybe that’s because I have been partial? I try not to be. It’s no secret I love folk, pop, and alt music, but let’s not get it twisted: sometimes, I gotta fuck shit up.

Who better to go on a binge tour of heavy rock that inspires the urge to break shit than The Sound Ninja.

Born and raised in Minnesota, The Sound Ninja, aka Brock Sombke, is all about that good noise. Yet it doesn’t come from an irresponsible place, immaturity, or even spontaneity. When most think of meditation, we think of quiet and peace, but meditation can be whatever it’s supposed to be for whoever is practicing. Even loud, energetic rock.

I get the impression that Sombke is a somewhat spiritual person, though maybe not so much a quiet one.

“The weeping willow tree is one of my favorite local treasures in this beautiful state (Minnesota). It gently weeps in the breeze when days are easy, and it fiercely battles the storm when days are tough. No matter what Mother Nature throws at it, it remains strong but continues to weep in empathy and fight for those who are less fortunate.” Sombke (on the album artwork)

Such a profound description. I, of all people, resonate with those who are able to go through life with the ability to contribute more than just, “Look. Tree.”

The Sound Ninja has been independently releasing music as a one-man band since 2018.

Debuting with In My Mind, in 2018, there is an immediate recognition to mainstream artist, Staind. Sombke’s vocals are quite similar to Aaron Lewis’, both having that pure sound that seems to be masking internal trauma, an element that made me absolutely obsessed with Lewis years ago and quickly drew me in to Sombke.

Also like Staind, The Sound Ninja have the capability of existing in a range of places within the rock genre. They are as capable of lulling peace to an audience with an acoustic ballad as they are of blowing the roof off of a club with a riff heavy, percussive, heavy rock song, on the verge of metal.

As one who is drawn to the musicality of a song or album and less inclined to observe lyrics, I would be remiss not to discuss the complexities of the content within The Sound Ninja’s songwriting.

These songs are wounds turned into sound, and pain turned into hope.” Sombke (on relating to the upcoming album)

Per Brock Sombke, the upcoming album, Let the Broken Heart Inside, “explores themes of emotional struggle and internal conflict, reflection, hope, unity, human struggle, and resilience.”

Let the Broken Heart Inside

Today, March 26th, 2026, The Sound Ninja releases the 11-song LP, Let the Broken Heart Inside, exclusively on Bandcamp. This is their third album, after 2022’s self-titled LP, The Sound Ninja. Blending a variety of riff-heavy stadium rock, with more somber acoustic rock performances, Let the Broken Heart Inside was written, performed, recorded, and produced by Brock Sombke, the sole member of The Sound Ninja.

“My music blends big riffs, aggressive energy, emotional depth, and raw DIY production. As a solo artist, everything: writing, recording, performing, and production, are done entirely by me, keeping the sound honest, raw, and personal.” Sombke (on what listeners can expect when hearing The Sound Ninja)

This album hits on composition, performance, and production. The songwriting is a great blend of energy-intense rock, mixed with more intimate acoustic performances. The performance is expert level. Whether instruments are performed, or programmed, everything is done with precision and reflect an emotional touch that compliment the vocals, making each song sound very real. The production is balanced, mixed, and executed in a way that every instrument and voice have their own spatial existence in the sound space.

The dynamics of this album are extraordinary from the hyped That Cursed, Fallen Angel, the very definition of a rock song, to Cuz I Waited, an acoustic rich alternative blend that is emotionally tolling, as it pours out of singer Brock Sombke.

Having listened to Let the Broken Heart Inside, I love the nostalgic sound of early 2000’s rock, as it relates to music today. I also love the personal touch and the metaphorical spin introduced by Sombke, tying the spirituality of the weeping willow into the heart of the album. This is a brilliant album. It has more than a few very special moments. For listeners who are into rock bands like Staind, even a slightly gentler System of a Down, The Sound Ninja is definitely for us!
