November, 2022 was the last time I was in Philadelphia. It had been years since I had played music. My son was really starting to get into it though and his favorite artist, Quadeca, was doing a very short tour which, at that time was uncommon. It was an opportunity we couldn’t miss. So, my wife, my son, and I took a day trip up to the city of brotherly love.

Once we got there, we stopped at a diner so I could devour a real cheesesteak. This sandwich is, to quote the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, “practically a food group.” It is the kind of meal that one can gain 5 pounds from the time they sit down to the time they get back up eating. The ingredient that nobody else gets right in the world; cheese whiz. It’s not really authentic if it doesn’t have the cheese whiz.

Pretty much the same thing can be said for the Philly-based 3-piece rock band, DelCobras. They’re so good, they have to be fattening. DelCobras live in that world that orbits around garage band, surf rock, and punk rock. Comparable to bands like Weezer and Blink-182, DelCobras exhibit strength in their vocal harmonies, their songwriting, and a lock-solid instrumental performance across the board.

Though DelCobras only debuted earlier this year, Jim (Skoopski) Lorino, Marc Schuster, and Nick Cervini are no strangers to the stage having performed together in the rock band Skoopski before. When Skoopski shifted focus to a solo recording project, the three decided to debut a new act.

In February, they released The Turnaround, a three and a half minute pop rock/pop punk party for our ears. The Turnaround was followed by Untied (She’s the One), releasing on May 30th.

DelCobras are every bit of what a solid band should sound like. Big guitars, big percussion, and big vocals that an audience can quickly sing along to. I legitimately found myself being able to sing right along with the choruses after 2-3 listens. It’s a comfortable familiarity that invites listeners right in to their performance.

About the EP

New Skins is the debut EP by Philadelphia-based punk rock band, DelCobras. It is their third release of 2025. The 3-song EP runs at a little more than 10 minutes. New Skins was recorded and released independently by the band on September 19th, 2025.

Just like their first two singles, DelCobras are not going to waste their audience’s time serenading them with a ballad. Their music isn’t going to be inconceivably in anyone’s faces. Not that what they perform is simple, either. It’s easy to play good punk rock. A band has to be exceptional to do it great though. Spoiler, DelCobras are great.

The first thing to know about this record is how captivating it is. DelCobras have put out three songs that don’t just engage the listener, they keep the listener engaged. The first time I listened to this EP, I think I spun it 4 times before I realized I was running it back.

All three songs are foot-tappers. As previously mentioned, they have vocally melodic moments that are seemingly intended to be easily clocked for sing-along opportunities. In Someday Soon, they open with a fast pace and catchy sing-along melody, that transitions into each verse. The chorus is very catchy and not lyrically complex, though very applicable to the song.

Caffeine and West Philly Bedroom both incorporate similar moments as well. That, in no way, implies that DelCobras have dumbed their music. There are still intentional narratives that spin interesting stories. The instrumentals are entertaining and complex. There are rhythmic changes mid song, progressive guitar performances, and a tight, pocket, cohesive energy that doesn’t just come the first time or even the 1,000th time somebody picks up an instrument.

Final Thoughts

I am in the opinion that, just because a band isn’t trying to outsmart its audience, doesn’t mean that they aren’t fantastic musicians, generally. More specifically, it is clearly not the case with DelCobras. Their music is polished and each of these musicians have reputations of being exceptional musicians in the Philadelphia indie music scene. They bring all the energy in an all-inclusive rock performance that will have the entire venue moving.

As a musician in my 40’s, I’ve seen a lot of different acts. I’ve played a lot of different shows. I’ve been a part of both types of performances. I’ve actually been the frontman of both kinds of acts; the kind where I tried to come up with more creative and more unique ideas and the kind where I wanted to invoke audience engagement. I think there is something to appreciate in both approaches. If we, as artists, can intellectually stimulate an audience, that’s incredible. I think it’s very hard to do, especially as an “unproven” band. I think the easiest way to prove ourselves is to be memorable. I think the most appropriate approach to that is to give the audience an experience they can be a part of.

DelCobras are incredible musicians. They are captivating songwriters. Having never been to a show, I can only speculate, but I think it’s safe to assume that their performance is an engaging one. New Skins finds these three musicians in their element; at the peak of performance. DelCobras aren’t redefining music, their reminding their audience of what music is truly about. They are entertaining.

This EP is easily one of my favorites to have ever reviewed. DelCobras are here to stay, and they’re bringing the party with them!
