MCB Style

I feel like every time I talk about this artist, I mention the fact that he usually only has 1 or 2 monthly listeners on Spotify. I hope this isn’t perceived in a way that anyone would think my intentions is to embarrass this artist. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. I don’t understand it.

MCB Style, out of Brockton, Massachusetts, has been a musician for most of his life. He wrote his first song at 9 years of age. He officially became a recording artist at 12, with the release of his song Life. He is a multi-instrumentalist, a singer, a rapper, and a producer. He has a catalogue of music now, with over 20 songs. He is barely old enough to drive. MCB is either 17 or turning 17 later this year (not sure exactly when his birthday is). He is passionate about his religion and he is passionate about his music. He steadily markets himself on instagram where he promotes his music, his message, and his image.

MCB Style

I first met MCB a couple of years ago when he submitted some of his work to be reviewed. Shortly after, his song Forever was released on Spotify and it was one of my favorite reviews to write. The fact of the matter is, I wish I had this much focus, this much drive when I was 15, 16, and 17 years old. Sure I was into music then, but I was a typically defiant teenager. Everybody was telling me I was going to be a musician when I was grown, so naturally I rebelled from that and tried to do anything else. MCB isn’t like that. I’m sure he has his moments where he can be a normal teenager, but I’m sure his mother would tell me those moments are few and far between. He is a good dude. He is well composed, professional, and he is talented.

If we are being critical, the production isn’t entirely without flaw. If we get into each track, there are a couple of areas that could use a little bit of tweaking and polishing. That is to be expected with any independent artist. The thing to remember is he is still technically a child. At seventeen, he is leaps and bounds ahead of the curve and he is doing it all on his own. I didn’t have the capability of finding the record button as a recording engineer when I was 17. MCB Style produces very good music and he has all the time in the world to perfect his craft.

Lessons in the Silence

Lessons in the Silence, Cover Art

Lessons in the Silence is the latest release by independent artist, MCB Style. He released it exclusively on YouTube on May 25th. It runs at around 2 minutes and 35 seconds. MCB Style performed vocals, made the beat, recorded and produced the track independently, all on his own.

There is a lot to love about this song. The sample, the beat, the flow, and the ornamentation. Lessons in the Silence is rap. MCB Style is a fluent vocalist, as he is an accomplished singer and rapper. His flow starts off slower as the song builds. He also experiments with some pitch modulations on his backing vocal which is sung.

It sounds like Lessons in the Silence isn’t so much a break up song but maybe reflecting on a past relationship, as in the break up has already happened; it’s over and done, but maybe there is some emotional ties that are still needing to be worked through. It could be the last bit of closure needed before moving on completely.

I like the production of the song. I think the sample and the beat are mixed well. I think the bass is dialed just about right. The vocals are also just about right in relation to the mix. Maybe they could be out front just a touch more, or maybe layer and pan the lead to fill it out a little more. The tone of the vocals sounds really good as well, particularly once the second verse starts. The first verse has just a little bit of that “other room” sound and could maybe be tweaked just a touch to put it out front a little more. This also could have been a creative choice from the artist, in which case, I wouldn’t change it. In essence, there is VERY little I would change on the production side of this song. It took way longer to type what I would do than it would have taken to do it. The important thing is there is absolutely nothing to change for the songwriting and the performance. I have no notes, it’s a fantastic song. And I would only make small changes in the mix to further enhance just how good I think the lead vocals are.

I would love to see what would happen if MCB worked with a producer. I am not sure what his plans are after high school. I don’t know if he plans to continue his education or jump into music with both feet. Either way, I hope he is able to continue to grow and improve as an artist and a producer. To have this much talent already, to have recorded and released more than 20 songs before he was legally old enough to cast his first vote is insane. I feel like this is an artist that is bursting with potential and I just cannot wait for him to blow up. To me, it’s not a question of if, but when.
