Let’s start with the obvious: Even if they’re not the droids you’re looking for, Nosferatu D2 deserves to be your new favorite band just for the cleverness of their name alone.

Now something less obvious: I used to watch Fame all the time when I was a kid, and it completely screwed up my sense of how old I would be when I was in high school. As far as I could tell, everyone who went to the school of the performing arts looked like they were at least thirty, and they all lived on their own. Would I turn thirty on my fourteenth birthday, I used to wonder when I was seven? Would I need to find an apartment in town and live on my own when it was time to move on to high school?

Another thing I used to wonder about — and if you’re not familiar with Fame, then none of this is making any sense to you — is that line in the theme song that goes “I want to live forever.” What did it mean? How would it work? Did fame really confer eternal life?

Now here’s the interesting thing: It seems like Ben and Adam Parker, the two brothers at the heart of Nosferatu D2, were wondering the same thing, conceivably at around the same time I was wondering it, as the lyrics of their song suggest: “Only seven years old when the penny dropped. No one gets to live forever.”

Which is a sad thing to realize at seven. But that’s okay because as a consolation prize you can get the track for free on Bandcamp; it’s a “name your price” deal, though I highly recommend supporting the band by purchasing their entire discography — which consists of the full length studio album We’re Gonna Walk Around This City with Our Headphones on to Block Out the Noise, the live album Live at the Spitz, and the extended EP (on which “The Kids from Fame” appears) Older, Wiser, Sadder — for the low, low price of $9.10 (US).
