Kat Yvonne

Four years after releasing her debut, Hiding in Leaves, Canadian singer-songwriter, Kat Yvonne has followed it with her second album, She Will Plant Trees.

Yvonne, who is known for paralleling her love for music and nature, has been working on this release for 4 years. Featuring three previously released singles: Wildflower, Space Time Continuum, and Hold On, her second album is a collection of poems brought to life with musical compositions that fully capture the marriage of these two loves.

Days before the album release, Yvonne shared with her Instagram followers that she was actually days away from giving birth to her second child. “I am expecting my second baby any day now, and feeling so happy that my album came together before he arrives. Life is insane and beautiful and getting to capture that in poems and songs is an experience I honestly never expected.”

She Will Plant Trees, Cover Art

She Will Plant Trees is the second album from Canadian independent artist, Kat Yvonne. It is 10 songs and runs at 37 minutes. Stylistically, it is acoustic-pop, alt-folk, and heavily inspired by Yvonne’s love for nature, motherhood, and other elements of her life. “The album is a very grounding and serene experience around the idea of finding a place to call home,” she describes.

There are true, genuine moments of absolute eloquence in this album. She Will Plant Trees maintains a positive vibe throughout. It is powered by her previously released singles, one of which (Hold On) features AiramFM.

My favorite song on the album is Subway Song. This song just stopped me in my tracks. I found it to be deep, genuine, and so very real. Accompanied by a gentle piano and synth strings, Yvonne takes the listeners on a walk with her thoughts. Her poetry guides her audience through the process of seeing the world in the way she sees it and this proves to be a truly mesmerizing experience.

The last time I wrote about Kat Yvonne was for the release of the single, Wildflower, which is the second song featured on the album. Revisiting this song was nice as it reminded me of how much I enjoyed it when first hearing it last year.

She Will Plant Trees succeeds in its authenticity. I find Kat Yvonne to be a very authentic songwriter. She articulates her joy in a way that lets the listener share it with her and understand her better. She’s not a person who says “I love nature” because she supposed to. It is a passion that is woven into her being.

This is an album for a quiet, contemplative day. A crisp, sunny morning, enjoyed with a hot cup of tea or coffee. A stroll in the backyard, barefoot and directly connecting our bodies with the earth.

Go press play.

  1. Good review. I see the word “authenticity” used a lot with respect to music, but I sometimes wonder what it means and whether the definition changes from one reviewer to another. So, out of curiosity, what does that word mean to you, and why is it important when it comes to music?

    1. That’s a good question and I appreciate you asking. I think an artist exhibits authenticity by their approach to how the music is produced. I can’t know for sure if someone is truly “authentic” or not, especially if I don’t know them. I look for indicators in what they’re releasing. I try to see if they’re simply trying to replicate something another artist has done before them, maybe an artist they respect or idolize. I like to listen to the lyrics and hear how they put their feelings into their own words. I’m not against a cliche phrase. I think I actually appreciate it if it’s done in a personal way. I think our humanity allows us to be really receptive to identifying whether a person is living a moment or simply creating one. So, I guess, authenticity is finding the moments that I trust the artists have experienced. With Kat, I think she loves nature because she actually loves it. Not because she is supposed to or because it is trendy to.

I think where an artist can show authenticity can change but I think how it is shown is probably more of a standard. We have to find those things that bring out our passion. We can’t force them. I think it’s important to do because it makes the music more approachable for an audience.
