Something that happens more often than I like to admit is that sometimes I intend to write a review and for one reason or another, I am unable to. So is the case with Michelle Renae, a Nashville-based singer/songwriter original from Vegas. Before relocating, Renae trained in voice, piano, and production, and performed every chance she could. Since making the move to Nashville, she has made stage appearances at venues like Margaritaville and Live Oak, and has upcoming performances scheduled at Whiskey Alley in Columbia, Tennessee and Soulshine Pizza in Franklin, Tennessee.

Michelle Renae has 3 official releases on Spotify, with her debut single, Weird, releasing in March of 2025. She has 3 additional releases exclusively available on bandcamp. In March, she released the single Conversations in the Dark. Renae’s draw to synth and her precision soprano performance remind me of Ariana Grande. It is a pop sound, but it is very distinct in its approach. She is also a particularly strong vocalist.

There is a lot of promise with Michelle Renae. First and foremost, she has the talent. She has an incredible voice, she fits into a pool of genres, and her style is distinctive. She looks the part. Last, and this might be the most important thing, she is really committing to this. Not only did she relocate, she has studied multiple facets of performing and producing. She is developing strategies to market her music, and she is doing a lot to put herself out there.

Maybe You’re in Love

Maybe You’re in Love is the latest release by Nashville – based independent recording artist Michelle Renae. It released on May 15th and it runs at 3 minutes and 15 seconds. It features Renae performing leading and backing vocals, accompanied to a very synth-heavy track. It was independently released by Renae, who also served as producer, with Kory producing vocals, it was mixed by Collin Hanley, and it was mastered by Jess Soelberg.

“”Maybe You’re In Love” is a synth-driven pop track that captures the moment you realize you might have feelings for someone you never expected. Blending 80s-inspired textures with California 2000s pop energy, it balances playful sarcasm with real vulnerability, built around an enemies-to-lovers story. It explores the ‘morningtime’ vibe after a night of tired confessions and dark secrets leading to the one question: ‘Are you in love?’” ~ Michelle Renae, via Bandcamp

Maybe You’re in Love is evidence to me that Michelle Renae is rapidly evolving. She has been good with everything, but this is her best release to date. The track is sensational. The body of the progression, the beat, and all of the ornamentation that is done in the production; the cash register ding, the little vocal beats, and everything. Vocally, Renae is spot on. She has a dynamic voice. She has a very good head voice and she can also belt some incredible notes with her chest voice. The layering of her vocals is a big factor in the difference. Her vocals are up front, they’ve got body, and she also performs the backing vocals nicely too.

I love the key change in the song. Key changes were pretty common once upon a decade ago, but as musical production has grown more digital, it’s heard less and less. Now, when I hear it, it’s a nice surprise. Particularly here, the vocals queue the modulation in a way that it’s not immediately detected, making it even more surprising.

Lyrically, the song playfully describes a relationship with an interesting dynamic. Like “I can see the smirk you get when I get angry,” or “Did you ever know that you’re an asshole?” These lines are depicted in a playful manner that suggests a dynamic where the couple had become comfortable with each other without ever realizing it. They then realize these little signs indicate that somewhere along the way, they fell in love. The playfulness is a truly endearing trait within the song. Even the title and the lead line of the chorus, “Maybe you’re in love with me,” is delivered in a way where the subject of the song is avoiding admitting she’s in love with the object of her affection by counter-accusing that he’s in love with her. It’s very cute, very playful, and it is most definitely catchy.

Listening to this song, just makes me want to hear more. Maybe You’re in Love with Me is a radio-ready track that tells me that Michelle Renae is a legitimate artist. I think she is surrounding herself with the right people. I think if she can release one or two songs that are at this level, she should be looking for showcase opportunities. I would definitely go see this one.
