It’s no secret that there are actors who sometimes cross over into the music scene and vice versa. In fact, it’s no real surprise either. An artistic person is more than capable of expressing their passion to create in more than one way, and everybody on the planet is capable of being good or successful at more than one thing. I think there is a stigma behind cross-over celebrities because there is an unrealistic expectation for somebody to be just as good at one thing as they are another, or that they are more successful at a secondary career because of how successful they are at their first career.

I don’t think either of those expectations are really fair. What’s the point of diminishing what we do? Not everybody can be Bo Jackson, the only person to be an All-Star in 2 professional sports, or Lady Gaga, a Grammy winner for her ability to sing and produce music and a Golden Globe winner and Oscar nominee for her ability to act. One could make the argument that it’s brake to put themselves out there in a different element, due to the whole imposter syndrome of it all. Sometimes, people are great at something and they’re pretty damn good at something else.

This week, there were two very surprisingly good releases by bands comprised of famous band members.

3 by Princess Goes

3, Cover Art

3 is the third album released by the alt-rock, synth pop band, Princess Goes. It is 11 songs and runs at 46 minutes. It was released independently through Morpho Music, the independent record label founded by band members Michael C. Hall, Peter Yanowitz, and Matt Katz-Bowen. 3 released today, October 30th.

I actually can’t stop listening to this album today. It is a universe of ambience, clever lyricism, and a dark, brooding vibe that leaves its mark on the listener.

Noteworthy songs include: French Kiss, Fall Chroma, Be Heavy, Snaggletooth, and Sincere Chroma.

Ive been familiar with Princess Goes for a few years now. I discovered them when I came across an article that talked about famous actors who also played music. I liked what I heard then, but this is easily and by far their best record.

Lost in the Night by Dead Man’s Bones

Lost in the Night, Cover Art

Lost in the Night is the first release by indie rock band, Dead Man’s Bones, in seventeen years. It released on Tuesday, October 27th. It runs at 5 minutes and was released by Anti Records, the independent label created by band members Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields.

Dead Man’s Bones only prior release is their self-titled debut album which came out in 2009. In spite of their debut being critically acclaimed, the duo have been dormant for nearly two decades. That is, until this week when they surprised fans with a single that is too good for its own good.

Lost in the Night was recorded in an abandoned barn in a day using a couple of acoustic guitars, a couple of drum machines, and some vocal mics. It has real TV on the Radio energy. I hope this is an indication of more music to come because this song is way too good to just leave it here.
